To know about each and every piping for its content and the material of construction is an asking task. Operations personnel may know about the content but are not aware about the material of construction as that is not the requirement of their day-to-day job. However if an inspection personnel knows about both the content and the material of construction of the piping running around then this is something really useful while he is performing a regular site visit or just have been at site to perform a certain inspection task. But this is only possible when there is certain existing system at site for identification of piping. Without having such a system at site, identification of piping is not simply possible.

Fig. 1: Piping content and color scheme

Inspection personnel on their regular visit pick up inspection findings sometimes serious and at other times not really threatening but still have to be recorded and some action required for them. Normally, these findings are collected manually with unconfirmed piping details noting down details like nearest equipment or control valve or other rotary equipment. Thereafter going back to office, taking out related P&IDs, isometrics and other detailed drawings to exactly get the right information required to report an inspection finding. Just if a system of identification exists then things get very easy. There is an inspection finding picked up on a piping system on a routine visit and the color code is telling about the contents and the material of construction, inspection personnel can make in-situ analysis of that. There and then severity of the issue can be estimated based upon the contents and the type of inspection finding which would in many ways help saving time in identifying, analyzing and addressing an issue.

Fig. 2: Graphical representation of color schemes

And with all piping color codes painted on piping all around, it is not only inspection personnel who will get benefited. Maintenance personnel came to address some maintenance work order related activity, PM job or any other against inspection recommendations can easily identify the piping tag on which the job has to be done. Maintenance support team providing access in form of scaffolding erection or removing insulation would not be calling initiator to come and show them the location where exactly support is required. During all these activities, initiator loses a lot of time around the plant where he is showing the maintenance support team that where exactly he requires what.

Calling a shutdown team of handful of inspection personnel through a contract in order to support during the outage with inspection and NDT works is very common in oil & gas and complex petrochemical units so that time window can be efficiently met. While that force is at site, it is not easy for them to locate the right piping. They are new at site, orientation is not clear. Though piping plans and isometrics help somehow but there is always a chance that for those new personnel, things become a little difficult especially identifying one single piping out of dozens running on a pipe rack. Even after identifying the correct one, during the next visit, things can fade out. No clear reference would be available. Supporting that staff in identifying the right piping to be inspected using permanent inspection staff is a huge wastage of time. In that case, shutdown support teams are called few days before at site however that is not justifiable only for identification of the right assets at site. Therefore, presence of correct identification system at site enables every person involved in piping works to get track of the right piping. Even the shutdown planning team would be making effective visits to site at the right spot where the job is on.

What kind of color codes should be used for identification? Which system can be followed? What are the minimum requirements? There are different schemes, practices and specifications available to guide through all this exercise. Some of them include the following:

Recommended Practice for Color Coding of Piping Materials – PFI ES-22

Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems – ASME /ANSI A13.1

Pipelines Identification Color Code – IS 2379

Specification of Pipelines and Services – BS 1710

All these practices and specification provide some basic and detailed information on how to color code piping and its material. It’s the discretion of the user which practice is the one to be followed. However as a minimum for an inspection personnel or any other maintenance team member, identification shall include:

Identification of piping content

Identification of piping material

Direction of flow

Identification of piping line number

Fig. 3: Sample representation of a piping with identification details

Any system providing these information to the inspection personnel while he is there at site would fulfil the requirements of reporting and addressing an inspection finding in lesser time. Line number would be providing the complete information regarding the material, rating and the finishing of the piping installed.

There are many sites where there is no system implemented and at a glance it looks like a laborious job to implement one when the whole plant is out there with a lot of complex piping systems running around. This can be addressed in a convenient way. A risk based approach can be followed in order to implement the system. No need to mark /tag N2 lines or the instrument air lines in the start. Focus on marking process lines based upon their risk score. Take out the safety critical list of your assets. Identify those lines which are having higher risk. These would have been the same lines being inspected by inspection section a little more frequently. So, the next time when inspection section asks for their inspection support, perform marking of those lines at the same time. Form up a task force which can manage this marking task in an efficient manner and in coordination with all relevant sections, this exercise can be undertaken.

<p
