Half of the installed flare structures at many facilities are guyed. There have been various programs which are in place for their routine inspection. This article describes some very basic checks which should be in place to maintain their mechanical integrity

Before looking into the inspection of guyed structures, major components of a guyed structure are to be listed:

a. Guy wire
b. Guy attachment
c. Anchor
d. Structure

Inspection program has to be developed majorly for above four components.

Fig. 1 Typical Guyed Structure

The major and the most important component in a guyed structure which requires inspection is the guy wire. All the load transmits through this component and is primarily the lifeline of the structure. Other components including anchor, guy attachment and the supported structure itself stands important as well however the chances of their failure is remote.

Guy wire:

The basic and the foremost inspection of a guy wire is to perform a thorough visual check. This should provide information related to the general condition of the wire especially the lubricating part. Grease is an essential component to protect guy wire from external condition. Visual inspection shall come up with findings, if any, on the condition of grease. With passage of time, grease solvent gets dried out and crack
formation starts. These cracks eventually give access to the external conditions especially air moisture to penetrate guy wire and cause internal corrosion. An effective penetrative lubricating system shall be made essential for guy wires to protect against external atmosphere. That system shall be applied at a set interval on guy wires. Typically, sites apply such system on two year basis.

Tensioning of guy wire is essential to its load bearing capability and overall stability of the whole guyed structure. This shall be ensured as per the recommendations provided by the manufacturer. This exercise is normally coupled with a verticality survey as well where the readings are taken and appropriate tensioning of wire is done

The third check on a guy wire is to perform an electromagnetic test, magnetic flux leakage (MFL) to ensure if there is any active internal corrosion. This is important with reference to the condition of greasing /lubricating over the guy wire. It stands mandatory when the greasing condition of the wire is not satisfactory while performing a close visual check. Usually an interval of two years or three years is set to perform such test in order to check for any possible internal corrosion. Guyed structure installed in moist, humid or marine environments shall be checked for internal corrosion of guy wire on a more regular basis or lubrication /greasing frequency may be increased.

Guy attachment:

This attachment is a set of components at the structure /stack side of the guy wire. It typically includes a lug which is normally welded to the structure. Along with this lug there is an anchor shackle and connectors like eye bolts, thimble or ferrules which hold the wire in its position. This whole set shall be inspected visually for their external condition which is basically a check on their coating system. They are normally
supplied galvanized. Any finding on their galvanizing condition or other coating system shall be addressed. Zinc epoxy coating system can be typically used for any touch-ups required or a full round of blasting and painting. Lug attachment weld shall be considered for a general check-up using dye penetrant testing method.

Anchor:

Termination of guy wire at guy anchor contains components like turnbuckles, thimbles and wire rope clips fastening the guy wire. Wire rope clips shall be checked for any looseness. Turnbuckle threads need to be inspected against environmental protection. External corrosion is the major damage mechanism which can affect the functionality of these components. Selection and application of an effective protective coating system shall be ensured. Concrete ground anchor shall also be examined for any abnormality. If required, a civil inspector may be requested to join for a combined interval inspection

Structure:

Mechanical integrity of the structure being supported through a guy wire also stands important. Usually a hollow structure which actually is carrying the load of the main component being supported either a flare tip or some piping network should be inspected visually and with appropriate non-destructive testing of its weldments. Structures having verticality issues along with gaps in guy wire tensioning can typically develop defects over a period of time which may go unnoticed.

Effective inspection of guyed structure ensures mechanical integrity of this very important equipment of any hydrocarbon operating facility.

Guyed structures are common in petrochemicals, oil & gas and other chemical industries.
