Identification of drillstring tool failure

Identifying drillstring or downhole tool failures early is critical because the first subtle signs often appear at surface before a catastrophic event like a twist-off, stuck pipe, or BHA loss occurs. What are the good practices here to identify that well in time?

Monitor surface parameters first which are the early warning signs.
Key indicators to watch include:
1. Torque Changes
Sudden increase > possible tight hole, tool damage, differential sticking
Sudden drop > tool joint failure, twist-off, connection failure
2. Weight on Bit (WOB) Abnormalities
Inconsistent WOB transfer
Weight not reaching bit > pipe stretch or mechanical failure
Unexpected slack off
3. Standpipe Pressure Changes
Pressure drop > washout, leak in drillstring
Pressure increase → plugged bit nozzles, solids accumulation
4. RPM & Vibration
Erratic rotation > BHA instability or motor failure
Stick-slip vibration > tool fatigue risk

Suspect tool failure if you observe:
Sudden torque drop
Unexplained pressure drop
Erratic WOB transfer
Sudden ROP change
Abnormal vibration
Loss of telemetry
Mud leakage at surface
Monitoring of these 7 parameters would help.
