Please recommend me a good read on the subject.
Beginner level, but expert in another discipline, working with petrochemicals.

Had been in the same need for a year, and then I got hold of:
Instrumentation and Control Systems by William Bolton
This title would help you understand quite a lot of things.

I might have recommended you something deep; it's good you cleared us out.
Measurement & Instrumentation Principles by Alan S Morris.

Check if you can get Instrumentation Engineers' Handbook by Bela G. Liptak.

You don't have to worry about that.
It handles all the applications of instrumented systems.
