Equipment performance monitoring

What are the software engineering tools being used by Operations Engineers within petrochemical plants to monitor & improve equipment performing?
Has it to be simulation software packages supporting this monitoring or other engineering tools as well?

There are plenty of them available to support trending, and performing analysis including the following:
Honeywell Experion PKS
Emerson DeltaV
Yokogawa CENTUM
AspenTech InfoPlus.21 (IP.21)
AVEVA PI System
ABB 800xA
We have been using PKS but for a very long time we were with AVEVA PI system.

These look like to be the software helping with data collections, trending, and performing analysis.
Tools to perform some sort of engineering calculations, validation /verification etc.? Are there any such tools in use as well? Or this path leads to process simulation solutions?
