How a piping support type is selected? What are the basis?
Please elaborate with reference standards?

American standards MSS SP-58, MSS SP-69 and MSS SP-89 contain everything regarding your query.
All the supports type and their selection guidance have been listed. I would advise you to keep any good book also with you while going through these standards.
If you have any specific query, you may ask.

Go through Chapter 5 McGraw Hill Piping Handbook and you would be knowing much after that.

When Piping Layout is finalized , and before submitting critical lines for analysis , whats the criteria which point in the routing will require support......how to decide that....?

The criteria for span of supports is mentioned in ASME B31.1 and other piping codes..also you'll find it in any Piping Handbook. See the table 121.5 attached. This is just a basic guide for dry/water/insulated pipe lines but a more rigorous and accurate methodology is to use a stress analysis software or tools and piping span will be automatically adjusted as you'll analyze against Gravity, Pressure, Temperature, Wind and siesmic loads, the combinations of all of them etc.
