How to perform tinning and babbitting on bearing?
Please share the procedure for doing the same and the recommended consumables.
Tinning and Babbitting
Re: Tinning and Babbitting
Tinning is done to provide a tight bond between bearing base metal and the new babbitt. The whole process goes in the following way:
1. Cleaning is made to ensure that the base metal is free of any dust, oil, greese etc.
2. The part is pre-heated before the tinning operation at a suitable temperature which is normally 450-500 deg F.
3. Tinning is done immediately after cleaning of the part and in heated condition.
4. Just after tinning is done, babbitting shall be started keeping the minimum defined pre-heat temperature of the part. If it would fall down, it must be heated again before babbitting operation.
5. The recommended babbitt material and the most commonly used is ASTM B23 Alloy 2.
6. The babbitt material normally melts at around 450 deg F but the pouring may be made at a higher temperature.
7. The babbitt pot must be properly stirred before pouring and dross (dirt or any oxidized metal) shall be skimmed off.
8. The best thing is to pour the babbitt in one go. Otherwise, proper preparations shall be made for quick operation.
9. Babbitt material must be free of cracks, surface flaws, discontinuities, blow holes, shrink porosity and surface porosity.
10. Surface finishing to be made as required.

Re: Tinning and Babbitting
Normally, tinning is done when there is a need of re-babbitting job. But it can also be done with new jobs to provide proper adhesion between the babbitt and the base metal.
1. For tinning, the best way to do is using of tinning paints which are available in the market. You have to select the suited one for your application.
2. Apply the tin paint on the surface with normal brushing.
3. Heat the bearing with a gas flame.
4. The paint will start melting and tin the surface.
5. Take care of the heat being given by the gas flame. Gently heat the part.
6. Oxidizing flame should be avoided.
Simple and easy way to go. You are ready for babbitting now.

Thanks for sharing the useful info.
What if we do not have the proper facility, tools and equipment to pour the babbitt? Any other most suitable alternate method?
