Hydrostatic and hydrodynamic bearings

Both hydrostatic and hydrodynamic bearings are fluid bearings (which support the total load of the bearings only on a thin layer of liquid or gas). Hydrostatic bearings depend upon external pressurized fluid for lifting of shaft while the hydrodynamic bearings use the high speed of journal area for self pressurization of the fluid in a wedge shape. This is why hydrodynamic bearings can get damage at lower speeds of machines.
