1) Knock out drums / Separators are used to separate either heterogeneous mixture of liquid from each other, vapor liquid phase, or vapor + heterogeneous mixture. Their layout is either horizontal or vertical depending upon the residence time required and terminal velocity of one phase (phase to be separated) in the other (phase from which to be separated).
2) Flares are used to burn unwanted mixture of flammable gases before they are vented to the atmosphere. Sometimes it is desirable to burn vent gases to meet environmental obligations.
3) A flame arrestor (also spelled arrester), deflagration arrester, or flame trap is a device that stops fuel combustion by extinguishing the flame. Flame arrestors are used on flares / fuel tanks to avoid backward propagation of flame into the flare stacks / fuel tanks in case there is a flammable mixture formed inside the flare stack. Usually flammable mixture is formed at the tip of the flares, but sometimes it can form inside stacks / tanks due to pressure fluctuations and can cause explosion.
4) Scrubbers are used to remove a particular gas from a mixture of gases, or to remove dust particles in air from air by absorbing it in an absorbent (usually water or some other liquid). An absorber can also be a scrubber.
5) Coalescers are also a kind of separators in which a discontinuous phase (like oil traces in oil water mixture) is combined to form its larger size droplets so that their settling / separation is accelerated in the continuous phase (water in oil water mixture). Coalescers are used to promote the separation of homogeneous liquid mixtures in which one phase is found in traces.
