Engineering software are in a wide use within oil & gas. What sort of practical AI application is possible to have in these software? Or it is hard to actually apply AI within such engineering calculations based software?

The short answer is yes, AI can significantly improve engineering software, but AI should augment engineering calculations—not replace them. Engineering calculations in the oil & gas industry must remain deterministic, traceable, and code-compliant. AI's role is to make engineers more productive while ensuring the underlying calculations still follow ASME, API, ISO, IEC, NACE, and other recognized standards.
The key distinction is between "AI calculating" and "AI assisting." The former is generally unacceptable for safety-critical engineering; the latter has tremendous potential.

I am not a big supporter of just bringing in AI into all our engineering calculations software packages and that is because of an engineering judgement which is applied to the basis of many engineering calculations. Human intelligence should be given priority here, as we engineers know what are our field conditions.

There are commercial products available which answer just like an engineer, at least this is what they say about that. Has anyone tried? Means their backend contains latest codes, standards, industrial references to fetch from.
