Detecting instrument drift before it impacts process reliability is one of the hallmarks of a mature reliability program.
The objective is to identify gradual degradation before the transmitter reaches its calibration tolerance or causes false alarms, poor control, or spurious trips.
The most effective approach is to combine process analytics, instrument diagnostics, and risk-based maintenance rather than relying solely on periodic calibration.

The strongest reliability programs use multiple layers:
Continuous online diagnostics from smart transmitters.
Historian trend analysis with statistical tools (EWMA, CUSUM, moving averages).
Cross-validation using redundant instruments and mass/energy balances.
Asset management systems to trend "as-found" calibration data rather than just pass/fail results.
Risk-based calibration intervals, shortening intervals for devices with recurring drift and extending them for stable instruments.
Predictive analytics or digital twins for critical measurements, particularly in high-consequence control and safety applications.

By combining these techniques, plants often identify transmitter drift weeks or months before it causes poor control, false alarms, product quality issues, or spurious shutdowns, significantly improving both process reliability and maintenance efficiency.

Operations troubleshooting at the same time is very important once there are any faulty indications from instrumentation.
Manual intervention, communication with field operator, having the right assessment in time are some important factors.

Asset management software helps in picking up the following parameters:
Calibration history
Device diagnostics
Failure history
Drift rate
Sensor health
Environmental conditions

They can predict like, "This pressure transmitter will exceed calibration tolerance in 4 months."
This is predictive maintenance rather than reactive maintenance.
