Some mechanical design engineer if can explain the advantages of using triangular /square tube layouts in heat exchangers?

Some of the factors here include higher heat-transfer efficiency with triangular arrangement; this staggered arrangement creates more turbulence on the shell side, which improves mixing and increases the shell-side heat-transfer coefficient. Then comes more tubes in the same shell diameter; because the tubes are packed more closely, a triangular layout can accommodate a greater number of tubes for a given shell size, increasing heat-transfer area. We may end up in a smaller exchanger for the same duty. The improved heat transfer often allows a smaller shell diameter and lower material cost for a given thermal duty. You can count on better resistance to shell-side fouling in some services. Higher turbulence can reduce deposition tendencies in certain applications.

Then with square layout, we have easy shell-side cleaning; straight cleaning lanes exist between tubes, allowing mechanical cleaning methods such as hydroblasting or rodding. We can hev lower shell-side pressure drop, the more open flow passages reduce resistance to flow. This is normally preferred for fouling services; suitable when solids, sludge, or heavy deposits are expected on the shell side. Reduced risk of flow-induced vibration in some cases just as lower cross-flow velocities can help mitigate vibration issues.

With triangular tube layout, it is difficult to mechanically clean the shell side because there are no straight lanes between tubes. We have higher shell-side pressure drop due to increased turbulence and less suitable for very dirty shell-side services that require frequent cleaning.
They are good for clean or moderately clean fluids with high heat-transfer duty services.

Square layout offers lower heat-transfer coefficient because the flow is less turbulent. Fewer tubes fit in the same shell diameter and often requires a larger exchanger for the same thermal duty.

See the general rule of thumb here is that you choose triangular pitch when thermal performance and compactness are the priorities and the shell-side fluid is relatively clean.
Choose square pitch when shell-side fouling and ease of maintenance are the dominant concerns.

There is a rotated square 45 deg layout as well. This arrangement:
It helps in:
Maintains cleaning lanes.
Provides somewhat better heat transfer than 90° square pitch.
Often considered a compromise between triangular and square layouts.
