Process Safety and Process Control Engineers

Post by chem51 »

What are the major differences in the role of process safety and process control engineers?? They can take eachothers responsibility by the nature of their basic qualification and process experience?

There is significant overlap, especially for engineers with strong process/operations experience, but Process Safety Engineering and Process Control Engineering are fundamentally different disciplines. Think in this way, that Process Control keeps the process within its normal operating envelope. Process Safety prevents loss of containment or catastrophic consequences when the process moves outside that envelope!

They can take each others responsibility by the nature of their basic qualifications and process experience? Yes as the basic studies would originate from understanding of chemical engineering. However, in actual when they are working in these different roles, they entirely have very different responsibilities. I have seen process control engineers moving out to become process safety engineers and less the other way round. But when sitting in one single office, their area of expertise are considered to be entirely different.

Was thinking the same. Means job role is entirely different but yes the background science behind all these responsibilities may stand the same, be a chemical engineer.
