What is the reason that the definition of asset Integrity and process safety sometimes is used interchangeably?
In my opinion, they are having distinct funtions.

Actually by definition, that should not happen.
Process safety defines the barriers necessary to prevent and mitigate a major accident hazard however, asset Integrity would make sure that all those defined assets in the barriers stays functional to their intended function.

What happens is that you still can relate them together. We have seen now one personnel handling the both responsibilities now in oil & gas sector.
Yes you define the barriers considering process safety but you maintain them through asset integrity.
Now you expand each of them accordingly as they would become within themselves a lot to discuss and care about.
Asset integrity going deep would be challenging the maintenance & inspection plans while process safety would still be questioning through HAZOP /LOPA. And that stays the continuous kind of a work.
