The most valuable indicator comes from the DCS and valve diagnostics.
Look for:
1. Excessive valve travel oscillations
2. Hunting around setpoint
3. Increased variability in the process variable
4. Slow response to controller output changes
5. Stiction symptoms
6. Valve deadband increase
A valve showing poor dynamic performance should be a high-priority candidate.

Apply risk score as well where applicable. This approach helps identify the top 10–20% of valves that contribute to most operational risk, rather than servicing hundreds of valves on a time-based schedule.

Data leads such as repeated packing failures, frequent seat leakage, recurring actuator problems, multiple work orders over recent years, repeat offenders usually deserve priority attention.
