Pressure Vessels without Fireproofing

Post by jeem »

Almost 6 years after commissioning of one of our operating unit, we noticed that there are several pressure equipment having no fireproofing however their supports /skirts do contain the clips indicating the need of fireproofing.
What are the best actions we must take in this case?

This is the same observation we had at our site as well where we see some of the equipment with cleats provided to their skirt supports however with no fireproofing. I am not sure whether our HSE has already observed and evaluated that or not but all what I could say is that this is true with multiple equipment in one zone, not the case with a single one only.

Those clips usually mean fireproofing was part of the original design intent but was either:
Missed during construction / commissioning;
Removed later during maintenance or modification, or
Never installed despite IFC drawings / vendor data requiring it
Since the unit has already been operating for almost 6 years, this should be treated as a management of change + integrity review item, not just a cosmetic maintenance issue.

Has to be treated as a process safety issue till it is resolved that location does not necessitate having fireproofing on all the static equipment.
Look for Passive Fireproofing Protection Philosophy document to confirm as presence of cleats indicate an initial assessment to have fireproofing installed but that might have been not required actually at site however design /ordering team made sure that equipment comes in with skirt supports having these cleats no matter fireproofing is needed or not.

This should be calling for an assessment comparing to what has been mentioned in the drawings & documents.
Which kind of document should be referred to in this case, though? Fireproofing Protection Philosophy like irish mentioned. HSE could help here to get these requirements verified.

You need to look for passive fire protection tables in fire and explosion risk assessment. This would provide you with all the fireproofing requirements.
