Predicting ESP Failure

Post by opo21 »

Is it possible to predict an ESP failure for an artificial head?
What exactly is recorded to be plotted, and observed closely?

Engineers monitor Amps, Voltage, Motor temperature, Intake/discharge pressure, Vibration, and Production rate trend.
You can say just like any other submersible pump in operation.
Trend analysis helps predict failure before it happens.

There can be four type of failures which can affect ESP:
1. Electrical
Motor winding burnout can happen. Insulation breakdown itself can happen, some cable damages or short circuits.
2. Mechanical
Shaft breakage happens, wear of bearing can occur, impeller damage or the coupling failure.
Keep good checks on vibrations, lubrication, and any excessive axial thrust.
3. Operational
Now a lot can happen including gas lock, solids erpsion, scale buildup, high temperature operation, off-design operations exceedance ... etc.
4. Well causes
Depletion of reservoir, high GOR, water breakthrough or unstable flow regime can eventually result into ESP failure as well.
