Integrity Operating Window - Corrosion

Post by octane »

While setting up the integrity operating windows, what should be the key parameters to be considered to avoid corrosion?

Octane, you might have seen API 584 Integrity Operating Windows para 9, where general considerations for establishing IOWs and their limits are provided.
Referring the same, it is the responsibility of the team involved especially Corrosion /Materials Specialist to necessitate the application of limits on the corrosive agents and their threshold value which may result into accelerated corrosion.

Not all cases would be same when defining such limits however approach would be to have the conditions identified which may lead to affect the integrity of the component in question.

Around the same issue, with no established integrity windows to monitor moisture content in a stream, we got excessive, and unexpected corrosion leading to unnoticed metal loss resulting into a leak, that too a hydrocarbon.
Checking the details, we got to know that as per original process design, there was no moisture expected with no corrosion hence no CRA material applied. Even if the team establishes integrity operating windows, a lot depends operating the plant as designed.
Deviating from the original post intention but thought to put some experience forward.
