Double conical and lip seal gaskets are used for those applications where you cannot afford any explosive gas leakages.

Lip seal gasket is the preferred one between the two as it involves seal welding also on the outer edge in addition to metal to metal sealing. See attached figure 1. This welding also becomes a bottleneck for maintenance activities where you have to open up the flange faces like in the case of head covers of reactors / exchangers etc. It is normally very difficult to reclaim a lip seal gasket once welding is cut to open up the flanges and this is unacceptable as lip seal gasket is too expensive. This bottleneck restricts its use to those flanges which are not required to be opened up during maintenance activities.

Double conical gaskets are having conical shapes on both sides of sealing faces having a point sealing contact unlike lip seal gasket. These gasket are used where lip seal gaskets are not feasible due to the issue mentioned above. For head cover flanges, double conical gasket is the choice left in place of lip seal gasket.
