Welding of duplex stainless steel with austenitic

Post by arcpro »

What is the recommended filler metal for welding of duplex stainless steels to austenitic stainless steel grades?
Should it be austenitic or duplex?
I have seen in my experience people using austenitic and sometimes duplex.

In order to weld duplex with austenitic stainless steel, I always use austenitic filler material like E309LMo as it is better to have an austenitic structure in the weld metal as it provides good general corrosion and toughness. Higher Ni containing duplex wires are also helpful to join autenitic to duplex stainless steel.

How can we weld carbon steels to duplex stainless steel? Electrode / wire?

arcpro,
Either of the two you use keeping this in mind.
Low levels of austenite: - Poor toughness and general corrosion resistance.
High levels of austenite: - Some Reduction in strength and reduced resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

octane,
For carbon steels to duplex stainless steels, you can use ER309LMo too.
Or if you can perform build up, then nothing like that. Build up carbon steel with duplex grade and then weld with high Ni duplex wire.
