Guidelines regarding Piping Support Locations

Post by novice123 »

Hi

Following are the some of the guidelines regarding Piping Support Locations

1) Always put piping Supports near concentrated loads (valves , Flanges , heavy fittings) in order to avoid weight stress.
2) Always provide Hanger supports near Equipment nozzles where large thermal movements are expected .

Kindly share your experiences regarding the said topic in this thread . So that all could be benefited.

Dear novice123,

To some extent the two points you mentioned are correct. Logically you must put a support near the heaviest of fittings or valves etc so that load can be instantly conveyed to ground or fixed structure if any. As far as hangers are concerned you need to select hanger type and spring sizes either from calculation or automatically from software and of course mostly where there is large thermal growths hangers are used to support such moving sections of pipe. Remember hangers are also used to carry some percentage of nozzle loads if they are greater on any equipment nozzle.

In short you need to consider many other effects as explained in the following topic, please read the last few comments in this topic...

3) Where the vertical runs of piping is enough, it's always advisable to provide support at the bend location
4) Vertical runs must be guided throughout their length to avoid any undesired movement
5) When piping covers distance in horizontal runs with several bends, then supporting at the bend locations (elbows) with pipe dummy support on structure helps in transferring the piping load
6) Normally, after providing supports at concentrated points like valves, heavy wall fittings as Salz has mentioned, remaining supports may be provided based upon the standard piping supports span tables available in different standards, handbooks.
7) Adequacy of supports system can be assessed by applying bending stress theory after providing concentrated, uniformly distributed loads and their reactions (supports)
8) Piping must not be over stressed by providing supports more than required.
9) Piping which would be facing high service temperatures and is expected to move during operation must be supported using computer aided programs and performing proper flexibility analysis.

10) When there are several pipe bends in horizontal plane, the support span must be reduced to 75% of the recommended value so that any eccentric loading may be avoided.
