ASME STANDARD FLANGES + SPEACIAL NOZZLES

Post by SOHAIL CHAUDHRY »

Can anybody advise me about following

1- Use of ASME standard flanges with litle modification like machining e.g. making groove on face, making female/male flanges by purchasing RF flgs, making holes in blinds flgs specially in Heat Exchangers. Need to recalculations of flanges according to App. 2, Sec VIII, Div 1 ?
2- How to select order Male/Female flanges, i mean which standard ?

Thanks.

1. Why do you do this? Machining and any other fabrication work on a standard RF flange to make it a male-female would cost you double. You need to design your custom flange as per ASME Sec. VIII Appendix 2 as you have mentioned and then fabricate it from the original material.
2. It's the same ASME/ANSI 16.5

Sometimes time saving & as per our experience making RF flange to female face flange is cheeper than purchasing the new female face flange ..
ASME B 16.5 does not only contain WN, SO, Bling, Threaded & SW flgs?

1. If this saves time and proves to be more cost effective for you, there is no restriction as far as you meet the design requirements. Which material you would be handling?
2. ASME B16.5 deals with all types of flanges whether type is face dependent or end dependent. What's the size in you case?

For example ASME B 16.5 establish the dimension of five types of flanges but all are RF or FF but no male, female groove. NPS 20 WN female type was the size in my case.

Please look carefully at table 4 and fig. 7 of ASME B16.5. It provides you the facing dimensions for all the flange types (except ring joint) including male female tongue and groove.
