What is Posilock Retrofit Device ???

Post by qaisarabbas »

We are going to reload gamma ray projector (684) with cobalt-60 radioactive source (of around 10 curies) from USA. The vendor also proposed a "Posilock Retrofit" for our projector mentioning it as USA Regulation Compilance.
- Can anybody has some knowledge about this device / regulation requirement by USA?
- Is it also mandotory for other countries?
- any picture or reference?

Urgent help is requested.

1. Posilok devices are the automatic lock mechanism devices for radioactive source retraction system. Posilok prevents any movement of a radioactive source withing the container when in locked position. This automatic system unlikes the manual one prevents retraction of the source into the back side of the device. The device is operated with a flexible steel cable that moves the source from its shielded position from to the end of source guide tube and then returns the source to the shielded position once the exposure is completed. The source is fastened with the steel cable via a stainless steel connector. This locking device is mandatory to be with the radioactive source when in USA.

2. I know Canada also.

3. See attached figures.

Thank you Mechcolor.

Appreciate your prompt answer with all details. You are always found helping.

If I look at my projector (684) there is also a security mechanism having a selctor ring & key lock arrangement (shown in attached picture). Please advise if this locking device is the same as "Posilock Retrofit"?
If yes, I must negotiate with vendor about his additional proposed device for the same projector.

No. The arrangement you have shown is for remote control cable connection. This is common for devices whether they contain posilok or not. See in my earlier post, posilok arrangement is always provided on the guide tube end connection for exposing and retracting of source safely.
With manual arrangement (non-posilok devices), the exposing and retracting is done manually and source doesn't have a fixed in place position upon retracting and have always a risk to come very near to the back end but with posilok, you keep the source in a properly fixed position safely every time.

Hope it clarifies.

I doubt your device (684) contains a posilok arrangement.

Well understood now. Thank you for clarification.
Any idea of price estimate ($) for a posilock device for gamma projector? Vendor is quoting it around 4 thousand us dollars, which seems quite expensive for such a small connector. Is it justified anyhow?

I do not know exactly how much it costs.
Contact a company SENTINEL, look what they say.
