Book Review:
Handbook of Mechanical Works Inspection
Author:
Clifford Mathews

Mechanical works inspection is a critical area during construction of any facility and its the QA/QC Engineer who has to take care of all such inspections. Normally, a book on such a subject just dedicated to Inspection of all Mechanical activities is hard to find and to cover everything related to mechanical works is not an easy job for any author. Not only stationary subjects are handled but the machinery inspections are also included. In addition to this, any QA/QC guy, looking after stationary and machinery inspections, is not expert in all the mechanical works and many a times need references to get the inspection done in the recommended way. And often, he gets himself stuck in doing many activities / inspection which are directionally not right. That's the reason I was interested to go through this book written by Clifford Mathews and published in 1997.

Going only through the contents of this book, you find them very interesting and one QA/QC guy would be eager to switch the pages as fast as he can to get to the subject he is interested in. The author starts with a unique first Chapter which is "How to use this book" which attracts the reader immediately. Then he describes about the approach to be adopted for inspections. Standards, specifications and Inspection & test plans have been elaborated along with their purpose and importance.

The book starts taking care of mechanical works from Chapter 5 onwards and you surely enjoy the ride from Welding & NDT through Boiler & Pressure Vessels, Gas Turbines, Steam Turbines, Diesel Engines, Power Transmission, Fluid Systems, Cranes, Linings, Painting and eventually Inspection Reporting. In all of these chapters, the contents are so crisp that you want to start remembering the lines and to implement in your area. Figures are elaborative, describing the processes. flow of inspections and the recommended hold points.

There are key guidelines throughout the book to enhance the quality of mechanical works at site. See some of the figures extracted from the book in order to have a thorough overview about what this book contains.

The book also entails common NCRs (Non-conformance Reports) and CAs (Corrective actions) against each mechanical works chapter. It also includes key point summary at the end of each chapter. Many of the references from internationally accepted codes and standards have been provided.

To summarize, if you belong to QA/QC section and looking after Construction Activities, get this book on your table.
Highly recommended !!!
